20-30?

Welcome to the LEx movement.

Shift is about empowering young people with lived experience to kickstart their careers in social impact.

Shift offers young people with lived experience free practical resources and exclusive leadership development opportunities. Shift is driven by our mission to transform the social impact sector by increasing the representation and influence of people with lived experience at every level of the sector.

What is lived experience?

We use Baljeet’s Sandhu’s brilliant report on Lived Experience (LEx) leadership to shape our work. Sandhu defines lived experience as:

Direct, first-hand experience, past or present, of a social issue(s) and/or injustice(s).

An Lex Leader is a leader who uses this experience to directly benefit the communities they share their experiences with. For example, a trans person who runs a trans rights organisation, or someone who has experienced homelessness who now volunteers at a homeless support charity.

Shift is about supporting young people with lived experience at an early stage in your career, to help you ‘activate’ your lived experience to benefit others and ensure you have the chance to fulfill your leadership potential.

What does Shift offer?

We offer our members four main perks. And all of our member services are free, now and till forever.

Career Support

Imagine you had a friend who had hired people for exactly the kind of social impact roles you want to apply for. Who had seen thousands of applications and sat across the table at tens of interviews. Who knows exactly what will make you stand out to the organisations you’re applying to. Or who has spent their career helping people find and land their dream roles. You could try and find this friend, or you could hire a career coach, or you just use our free career support service.

You can:

  • Share your CV for detailed feedback and advice

  • Share a job application/cover letter for detailed feedback and advice

  • Help with interview prep if you have an interview secured

Leadership Development

Shift offers space spaces in which young people with lived experience  can reflect on how they want to activate those experiences within their social impact careers. Our events introduce young people with lived experience to one another and to social impact professionals and leaders, and our workshops offer practical career and leadership development tools, all focussed on using our lived experience to drive social change.

On top of this, we host some open events for members and non-members and we also offer free resources to everyone through our website.

Spare Room Accomodation

Room for Change has a network of volunteer hosts who have a spare room in their home in London that they are happy to let a Room for Change member to use for free if they need it to take part in a career opportunity in social impact in London like an interview, work experience or internship- that they couldn’t take part in without having somewhere to stay. The maximum stay offered is two weeks, although many hosts offer less than this. While it won’t solve your long term struggles with London rent, it can help you practically with short opportunities or give you breathing space while you find a long term accommodation option that works for you.

Mentoring- coming soon

You can be matched with an experienced social impact professional who has been trained to use their career experiences to support mentees who are starting to build their careers in social impact. Your mentor will work with you for between 3-6 months and will usually speak with you around every 3-4 weeks. They will explore your specific plans with you and use your time together to help you work on those plans in a supportive and friendly way. It’s a great way to get insider tips and help, and also to build your network of people in the sector, which is a really useful tool for career development.

If you want a mentor you’ll be asked to fill in a very short form to say what you’re looking for help with and then we’ll send you profiles of relevant mentors so you can pick someone who is right for you. You’ll be able to have an initial chat to see if you get on ok before you both commit.

You need to:

  • Be 20-30 years old

  • Live in England

  • Already be working in or want to work in social impact

  • Self-identify as having lived experience (using the descriotion above and here)

The lived experience leaders Sandhu spoke worked on the issues covered below and they each had personal experience of the issue they worked on in that sector. This isn’t a complete list but it does cover a lot! If any of these issues relate to your personal experience, for example if you are Black or Asian then the issue of race equality is likely to relate to your experience you likely have lived experience.  And similarly, class equality might relate to you, if for example your family or you have accessed benefits and lived in social housing, or if you were the first person in your immediate family to go uni, or if you accessed additional financial support on top of your student loan when you went to uni to help you get by.
